Cepot, sapa cepot itu?

Cepot/Astrajingga merupakan anak angkat Sanghyang Ismaya (semar) yang tercipta dari bayangannya sendiri untuk menemani Semar ketika diperintahkan Sanghyang Tunggal untuk mengabdi kepada Trah Witaradya (Ksatria). Bicaranya kekanak-kanakan tapi selalu penuh makna

Ia merupakan anak pertama dari tiga bersaudara dari pasangan Semar Badranaya dan Sutiragen (sebetulnya Cepot lahir dari saung). Wataknya humoris, suka banyol ngabodor, tak peduli kepada siapa pun baik ksatria, raja maupun para dewa. Kendati begitu lewat humornya dia tetap memberi nasehat petuah dan kritik.

Lakonnya biasanya dikeluarkan oleh dalang di tengah kisah. Selalu menemani para ksatria, terutama Arjuna, Ksatria Madukara yang jadi majikannya. Cepot digunakan dalang untuk menyampaikan pesan-pesan bebas bagi pemirsa dan penonton baik itu nasihat, kritik maupun petuah dan sindiran yang tentu saja disampaikan sambil guyon.
Dalam berkelahi atau perang, Sastrajingga biasa ikut dengan bersenjata bedog alias golok. Dalam pengembangannya Cepot juga punya senjata panah. Para denawa (raksasa/buta) biasa jadi lawannya. Sastrajingga merupakan tokoh panakawan putra Semar Badranaya.

Sastra adalah tulisan. Jingga adalah merah. Si Cepot adalah gambaran tokoh wayang yang mempunyai kelakuan buruk ibarat seorang siswa yang mempunyai rapot merah.
Namun demikian ia sangat setia mengikuti Semar kemana saja dia pergi.

Kehadirannya dalam setiap pagelaran wayang golek sangat dinanti-nanti karena kekocakannya. Asep Sunandar Sunarya menjadikan si Cepot sebagai kokojo / tokoh unggulan pada setiap pagelaran. Bahkan tanda tangan Asep Sunandar ditulis atas nama Cepot. 

Selain Astrajingga, terdapat tiga tokoh lagi yang selalu menjadi pusat perhatian yakni ayahnya (Semar) dan kedua adiknya (Dawala & Gareng). Keempat tokoh ini disebut pula sebagai tokoh Punakawan, artinya  sebutan bagi empat orang abdi yang bertugas sebagai penasihat dan pemberi petuah bijak bagi para tokoh Pandawa. Salah satu tokoh yang menjadi ikon pewayangan adalah tokoh Astrajingga.
Biasanya seorang dalang menampilkan si Cepot beserta tokoh kocak lainnya disela-sela cerita sedang tegang, atau di tengah-tengah cerita. Dengan pembawaan watak yang kocak dan lucu si Cepot selalu menemani para ksatria, terutama Arjuna dan Ksatria Madukara. Oleh dalang, si Cepot digunakan untuk menyampaikan pesan-pesan bebas bagi para penonton baik itu nasihat, kritik maupun petuah dan sindiran yang dikemas dalam guyonan. Dalam berkelahi atau perang, Sastrajingga biasa ikut dengan bersenjata bedog alias golok. Dalam pengembangannya Cepot juga punya senjata panah. Para denawa (raksasa/buta) biasa jadi lawannya.
Kedua adik Astrajingga juga tidak kalah kocak dengan kakaknya. Dawala adalah tokoh pewayangan yang digambarkan memiliki hidung mancung, muka bersih serta memiliki sifat sabar, setia dan penurut. Kelemahan yang ditonjolkan pada tokoh ini adalah kurang cerdas dan tidak begitu terampil. Sementara adik kedua Astrajingga setelah si Dawala adalah  Gareng. Ia pun memiliki karakter lucu dan kocak. Dalam tokoh pewayangan Gareng adalah anak bungsu.
